the better me diaries ep. 3: how to make a mood board + mistakes

hello and welcome back to my blog! if you are new here, hello my name is Karla, I am a junior in college majoring in health administration. this series on my blog is going to be a raw, in-depth journey I am taking to get healthy, find myself, face my problems and challenges head-on, find my purpose in this world, and ultimately find who I am. I hope through taking this journey and putting it on the internet, I will be held accountable to obtain the life I deserve, and I hope maybe one person reads this and decides to do the same for them. you can check out the other episodes here.

This week I decided to boost my motivation and inspiration for this journey by creating a mood board! I have made mood boards in the past but this one I wanted to really spend time on in order to give me the motivation and inspiration I need!

The first step in making a mood board is finding images that focus around your goals! I took to Pinterest for this and created a specific board dedicated to these images which you can find here. I used a lot of fitness and healthy eating images as well as quotes and bright colors to capture the mood and aesthetic I was going for!

The second step is printing them off, I copied and pasted all of the images into a google doc and then printed them off at the library using the color printer! If you do not have access to a color printer feel free to print them in black and white!

Next, cut all the images out and you can either tape them in or glue them in whatever you are using! Since I am using my bullet journal I decided to use double-sided tape to stick them down the way I wanted. This is the fun part, you can arrange them in any way you want and create the perfect collage! Here is how mine turned out:

If you have not started a bullet journal I highly encourage you to do so! It is a great way to get organized, inspired and motivated! I find myself looking and writing in my bullet journal at least twice a day, it just reminds me of what I need to do and in a way it holds me accountable!

Moving on, I wanted to talk about how this week went on the journey because it was a rough one. I did not eat healthy like I said I was going to, I ended up going out to fast food a couple times and my snacking was out of control. I did go to the gym once which I was proud of, but it does not make my eating habits disappear.

I know I need to eat healthily, but the convenience of fast food when I am busy is something I get addicted to. When my friends and I hang out, we oftentimes go and get something to eat, so that also adds on to the bad eating habits and spending money.

I know I am not perfect and that is okay, it is normal to have slip-ups and I need to be able to recognized the reasons why I continue to mess up. I know the main thing is being constantly stressed, whether that be about college, work, or my personal life, stress is a big factor that leads me to eat in ways I shouldn’t.

On the bright side, I have been consistently been waking up between 7am and 7:30am and have been sticking to my morning routine. Reading before bed has really allowed me to fall asleep quicker and ultimately sleep better which I am more than happy about.

the better me diaries ep. 2 routines and goals

hello and welcome back to my blog! if you are new here, hello my name is Karla, I am a junior in college majoring in health administration. this series on my blog is going to be a raw, in-depth journey I am taking to get healthy, find myself, face my problems and challenges head-on, find my purpose in this world, and ultimately find who I am. I hope through taking this journey and putting it on the internet, I will be held accountable to obtain the life I deserve, and I hope maybe one person reads this and decides to do the same for them. you can check out the other episodes here.

So this was my first official week on this journey, and I think so far it has been going very well. One of the main things I am trying to do on this journey is take everything day by day, worrying about the things going on currently, not things happening in the future or that have already happened previously. The first thing I wanted to do in order to keep myself accountable is visualize what routine I want to keep and the different goals I have for myself.

Having a structured routine in my life is a necessity for success, it allows me to visualize how I want my days to go. Here is my ‘ideal daily routine’ spread in my bullet journal;

starting with my morning routine

  • 7:00 am
    • wake up
    • make bed
  • 7:30 am
    • brush teeth
    • wash face
    • take medicine
  • 8:00 am
    • get dressed
    • makeup/hair
    • to-do list
  • 8:30 am
    • hydrate
    • breakfast
    • pack up and leave

next is my night routine

  • 9:00 pm
    • take off makeup
    • pjs
    • moisturize
  • 9:30 pm
    • journal
    • youtube
    • instagram
  • 10:00 pm
    • phone away
    • read
  • 10:30 pm
    • sleep

Now the fun thing with this is you can customize these routines based on what works best for you! For me, my days start no early than 7 am because I have no where to be until 9 am everyday, so a two hour morning routine is more than enough time. This is all about trial and error, seeing what makes you feel the best throughout the day and what helps you stay focused and positive is an important part of these routines!

One thing to keep in mind while making these routines is being honest with yourself is key. Very few people enjoy getting up early, and if you are one of those people then chances are waking up at 5 am suddenly is not setting yourself up for success. You have to take gradual steps to make these good habits come natural to you, so maybe start by waking up at 7 am, then 6:30 and so on.

The next thing I wanted to do set goals for myself, goals are important because they allow you to see what you want, and think about the steps you need to take to get there. In order to visualize these effectively, I split them up into 4 categories; academic, social, health, and personal. Here is my bullet journal spread for these;

  • academic
    • stay ahead in all my classes
    • end the semester with at least a 3.6 gpa
    • explore different career options
  • social
    • have 1 meaningful conversation a day
    • put myself out there more romantically
  • health
    • lose 5 lbs by christmas
    • eat out only 3x per week
    • track all food daily
    • go to the gym at lease 3x per week
    • drink at least 3 bottles of water per day
  • personal
    • take my mental health seriously
    • stop procrastinating
    • keep my room clean
    • read daily

Making goals for yourself is so freeing, it also makes you feel a sense of motivation and responsibility to get all of these things done. It is super important to once again be honest with yourself, and be reasonable with what you want to achieve. For example, instead of giving myself a broad goal of losing 20 lbs, I set a goal to lose 5 lbs by Christmas, which is more feasible and will prevent me from losing motivation or getting discouraged easily.

With that being said, I am happy to say week 1 went very well, I was able to wake up at 7 am every school day and was indeed asleep by 11 pm. I only went to the gym one time, and did 30 minutes of cardio, however I am starting small and celebrating small things in order to keep myself motivated. Eating healthy went pretty good as well, I only ate out twice and when I did, I made more conscious decisions on what I ate.

My goal of having 1 meaningful conversation a day is what made me feel the most joy and happiness, even if it was just a simple ten minute conversation with my grandma, it made me feel better to know I was positively contributing to my relationships and friendships.

That is it for the second episode of the better me diaries, I hope you guys enjoyed and if you did make sure to subscribe to my blog, this series will be going up every Sunday! here is my mood board on Pinterest!

the better me diaries ep. 1 my dream self

This series is something I have been wanting to start for a long time, it is one of the main reasons I started my blog years ago. Recently I stumbled upon a series on youtube entitled ‘The glow up diaries’, a series dedicated to a woman going through the motions of life, and instead of getting sucked in, she takes her life and makes a change. Through watching this series, I have become inspired and moved, to make the changes in my life I have been needing to for a long time. So thank you Alivia D’Andre for the inspiration I need. Check her out here.

I have been needing to make a change in my life, for years now. I have dealt with a lot in my twenty years on this planet, and have never really done anything to better my situation or who I am as a person, until now.

I am not happy with my life, and I have not been for a very long time. I go through the motions of dealing with my depression and anxiety in unhealthy ways such as eating, shutting people out of my life and losing focus on what truly matters. This doesn’t just affect me, it affects everyone around me, my education and it prevents me from being the person I have wanted to be for so long. So in order to change this, I have created a journal in order to visualize these thoughts and goals, inspired my Alivia and Pinterest.

Part 1: my dream self

In order to begin this journey, I have to be able to know who I want to be at the end of it, my ‘dream self’ so to speak. The first step to this is creating a perfect balance of my life, which includes; rest and sleep, good nutrition and exercise, relationships, school and finance, intellectual stimulation, creativity and play, and finally sense of purpose.

I went through the motions of asking myself questions in order to capture this dream self on paper.

  • how does she look at life?
    • life is a beautiful thing and even through the ups and downs, she is happy to be alive
  • what does she eat?
    • she eats to fuel her body, not to fuel her emotions or stressed, she has a well-balanced diet.
  • who does she surround herself with?
    • she surrounds herself with people who love and support her endlessly. those who make dark moments bright and turn bad into good. she is not afraid to get rid of anyone who brings her down and makes her feel as though her authentic self is not good enough.
  • what does her body look like?
    • her body is toned and there is no look of fat which makes her feel lesser than she is. she is confident when she looks in the mirror and no longer labels herself as ‘fat’.
  • what does she focus on?
    • she focuses on school, her relationships and herself. she no longer procrastinates or locks herself away in a pit of depression.
  • how does she express her creativity?
    • she blogs, with the hope that she will make a difference in people’s lives and make them happy. she journals, draws and writes until her heart is content.
  • what is her purpose?
    • her purpose is to succeed, in school, her career, and in her creative outlets. she wants to make an impact in this grim world in an effort to make it bright.

Here is the visual spread I created in my bullet journal:

Through visualizing my dream self, the balance I need and asking myself those questions, I have the motivation to change my life in order to obtain these things, to make my dream a reality.

That is it for the first episode of the better me diaries, I hope you guys enjoyed and if you did make sure to subscribe to my blog, this series will be going up every Sunday! here is my mood board on Pinterest!
