What Classes I’m Taking Fall 2019!

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a junior at Central Michigan University! I post book, lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below! Follow my Instagram here!

So I do this post pretty much every semester so I figured I would continue to do it! I will be a junior this year and I am majoring in Health Administration with a minor in Leadership. I will be taking a total of 15 credit hours which is what I have always taken! So here are the classes I am taking Fall 2019!

  • LDR 302: Field Experience in Leadership (3 credits)

So I honestly have no idea what to expect with this class, I know we are required to complete a certain amount of hours in an approved leadership position throughout the semester but other than that I have no idea what to expect. This class only meets once a week for fifty minutes so I am hoping it is not too hard of a class!

  • HSC 544: Biostatistics (3 credits)

I know this is going to be my hardest course this semester. I have not done any kind of math since my freshman year of college, and the last time I did statistics was my senior year of high school. I did very well in my AP stats class though to I’m hoping I will be able to remember the basics and do well in the class!

  • HSC 572: Legal Aspects of Health Service Organizations (3 credits)

I am super excited about the class because I will be able to learn more about the healthcare system and the way it runs! One struggle I have been facing is figuring out what I really want to do with my degree because I can do so many different things. So I am hoping this class will give me a little insight as to what I want to do in the future!

  • GEO 105: Physical Geography: Online (3 credits)

Unfortunately, my college requires we take core courses in order to graduate, and this is one of them. I try to do the majority of these classes online just because I don’t have any motivation to go to the class when it is in person. I am hoping this class will be an easy A and give me the credit I need but we will see!

  • SOC 323: Racism and Inequality: Online (3 credits)

While this is another core requirement I am actually super excited to take this class! With that is going on in the US right now I think it is super important that we be educated on the issue of racism and inequality. So I can’t wait to see what this class has to offer!

So those are the courses I am taking this fall, I can’t wait to get back into the swing of things!

Advice for College Freshman!

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a junior at Central Michigan University! I post book, lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below! Follow my Instagram here!

Now that I am going into my junior year of college id say I am pretty reputable when it comes to giving advice to an upcoming freshman! Here are some things I wish I would have known before college:

  • Your high school friend group will not be the same.

I think this is such a harsh reality of going away to college but it is very true and everyone I’ve talked to says the exact same thing. Your friends will try and make a pact that you will always be friends no matter what but honestly, college is likely to break all of that up real quick. It’s hard, some friends may go out of state, some will be on the other side of the state and you won’t get to see them every day like when in highschool so yes, your friendships will suffer!

But fear not, this is a healthy process and it is not something you should obsess or stress over! Check-in on your friends every now and then and hang out over breaks or on the stray weekend you both are home, effort is the key factor in maintaining your old friendships when going to college and you will find out real quick that not everyone will put in the same amount of effort you will!

  • No one cares what you wear.

I was the freshman who dressed up for classes every day, and I can tell you that ended real quick. One of the best things about college is nobody cares what the next person is doing, so wear sweats to class, don’t do your makeup, or dress to the nine and beat your face, nobody cares either way. Don’t think people are going to like you better because of the way you are dressed, because chances are they don’t care.

  • Don’t overpack, you won’t use half of the things you think you need to bring.

Oh, how I wish someone would tell me not to bring my entire wardrobe, because let’s face it I wore the same things nearly every week. Yea decor is cute and all but there is only so much you can do to spruce up a dorm room so don’t go overboard because at the end of it all you are going to be the one packing it and hauling it away. You don’t need a thousand pairs of shoes, some sneakers, rain/snow boots, a pair of booties and one formal option will be more than enough! If you have a second thought on bringing something while packing, toss it to the side and leave it at home.

  • It’s okay to sit alone, people do it all the time.

Don’t worry about sitting alone at dinner or at the library, no one cares and I promise no one will think you are a ‘loser’. I was always so scared to go anywhere by myself but you’d be surprised how little alone time you get, especially while living in the dorms so take this time to plug in some headphones and watch some youtube videos, read a book or catch up on some work!

  • Make at least one friend in every class and get their number the first day.

Having friends in classes is one of the most important things to take advantage of! Miss a class, text them and ask for the notes, or meet up to study or do an assignment you both are struggling with. Unfortunately, in college, there will be times where a professor will tell you to pair up, and rather then panic and look around the room desperately you will already have someone to work with!

  • You’re broke, quit spending money.

College will bring you to depths of brokedom you have never reached before. I found myself contemplating buying simple things like Slurpees or going out to eat on lunch simply because I knew I didn’t have the money to. So drop the Starbucks habit, you won’t be able to afford it, find cheaper alternatives to things you love to eat or do!

  • Have fun!!!!!

This is the most important on the list when in college it can be so hard to sit back and relax and actually enjoy yourself. Don’t get too upset if you fail a test, someone else in the class surely did too, don’t get caught up in petty drama, learn that saying no is just as important as saying yes. College is going to bring you so many opportunities and situations you thought you would never encounter, so get out there and join a club or pick up a new hobby, say hi to someone in your hall or ask someone in your class to get dinner! College is what you make it and at the end of it all, you don’t want to have any regrets.

Summer Weekend Morning Routine!

I recently decided to re-start my entire Instagram and focus it towards book and lifestyle blogging so be sure to check it out here and give it a follow!

This post was requested on my Instagram and now that we are pretty much halfway through summer I thought it would be the perfect time to do it! For those of you who don’t know I work as a nanny during the week! I work Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm, this is my second summer nannying for the same family and I can honestly say I love my job!

With that being said I do spend my weekends in a more relaxing manner and take the time to unwind and really just do things that I want to do but might not have time to do during the weekend! So here is my typical summer weekend morning routine!

8:00-9:30am: Wake up

  • Because I am so used to being up at 6:00am during the weekdays, I naturally wake up earlier on the weekends than I did before! I don’t set alarms or plan to go to bed at a certain time, I kind of just listen to my body and go to sleep and wake up when I feel its time!

10:00-11:00am: Social media, youtube, journal, ect.

  • This is the time in the morning where I allow myself to just lay in bed and catch up on everything, whether that be scrolling through all my social media or watching all the videos in my subscription box! I also take this time to journal, I journal every day and reflect on the day prior by writing what I did, how I was feeling, as well as my low-light and high-light of the day. Journaling really just allows me to get all my thoughts out on paper and it also allows me to look back on the days and see just how I spent my summer! In addition, I will make to-do lists for the day and write down any blog post ideas or any books I want to read!

11:00am: Get ready

  • So once I am done journaling or catching up on social media I will get ready for the day. This consists of washing my face, brushing my teeth, doing my hair and makeup and getting dressed for the day! On days when I am going to the gym I simply skip out on doing my makeup and will get dressed for the gym! I ALWAYS make sure to apply some sort of SPF to my face, regardless of what I am doing that day it is so important to apply sunscreen to prevent damage to my skin.

11:30am-whenever:

  • This is the part of my morning where I will either head out to the gym as I said, or take the time to sit down and read my current book or write! Right now I am reading ‘The Outsider’ by Stephen King, which is a very long book so it will take me longer to read than normal. If I do not read I will sit down and write, lately I have been writing an adult fantasy book just as a passion project of mine so I usually try to write 1,000 words or a chapter a day!

So there is my typical summer weekend morning routine! If you enjoyed this and want to see a summer night routine comment and let me know!

Beauty/Haircare

Now that it is summertime it is so important to make sure your skin is protected, especially the sensitive skin on your face! I have been using this sunscreen on my face for years and recommend it to anyone! It is not greasy at all and does not feel heavy on the skin! It also allows your skin to breath and still get a good tan without burning!

I was in search of a new leave-in treatment for my hair and I am so happy I found this one! This Mist is amazing for when you get out of the shower, it detangles and hydrates your hair as well as takes away frizz! You can also spray it on dry hair to refresh it when you are in between washes!

Where the Crawdads Sing: Book Review!

Recently I have fallen back in love with reading and I couldn’t be happier. I decided to order some books off of Amazon that have been raved about and recommended to me, each book I read I will write a review to let you guys know what I think! There will be little to no spoilers in these reviews! Follow me on GoodReads to keep up with my reading progress! My username is karlaasmith or you can find my profile here.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Start date: June 23, 2019

Finish date: June 24,2019

Synopsis:

“For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life—until the unthinkable happens.”

My Review:

★★★★★

This book easily earned five stars from me. I am typically not into books like these, but this story changed my perspective completely. This book is so much more murder mystery, it is truly a coming-of-age story. Through the twists an turns of Kya’s life the book eludes to a murder that took place near the marsh as they try and figure out who could have been the killer.

The romance in this book is unlike anything I have read before, there are no cheesy, typical things you would read in a basic romance novel, the romance in this book is raw and a depiction of what falling in love as we grow really is all about.

This book took me less than twenty-four hours to finish, I had the hardest time putting it down and as I neared the end I dreaded not being able to read the book anymore. The story itself starts out a little slow but quickly sucked me in and captured my attention and my emotions.

I was really able to connect with Kya and everything she was feeling and had gone through in the duration of the entire book. The twists and turns this story took had me anticipating the next chapter to see just where the plot would go, and I was always left wanting more. The ending of this book left me in absolute shock, I was not expecting the plot twist it had taken and was genuinely left surprised.

I would recommend this book to anyone, no matter what they like to read you will find enjoyment out of this book! Be ready to devote your time to this book because you will not want to put it down!

Q&A Sunday pt.1: College, Lifestyle, Sorority and Much More!

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a sophomore at Central Michigan University! I post lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below! Follow my blog instagram here!

This was highly requested for me to do and I got a bunch of questions from you guys! If you would like to send in questions or ask for advice you can message me on instagram(@liveitwithkarla), comment below or email me at lifewithkarla@gmail.com! Let’s get into answering your guy’s questions!

  • How do you deal with roommate issues?

So this question is one I got multiple times and I can totally understand why. For most of us, college is going to be the first time you live with roommates that you don’t know, and it can be rough. Last year I lived in a 4 person dorm with 3 random girls, and it was a big adjustment, to say the least. The first thing to do is sit down and discuss rules, whether you are okay with overnight guests, how clean the dorm needs to be kept, whether or not you are comfortable with your things being borrowed and one of the most important things to discuss is partying, whether or not you are okay with typical party activities happening in the dorm.

One of the main issues we had as roommates was the lack of common courtesy. When living with other people you have to respect that you are not the only one sharing that space, so good things to do are ask before you have guests over or let your roommates know you are having a hard week academically and would prefer to keep the dorm quieter for the week. Any issue can be resolved and if you do not feel comfortable doing it on your own then seek out the help or advice of your RA, that is what they are there for! Focus on your academics and don’t allow roommate issues to impact the way you perform in your classes!

  • Advice for someone who has never partied before? How do I handle college party culture without getting overwhelmed?

First off you do not have to party in college, don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. Partying in college is very controversial but also a big part of the culture. If you do decide to party, stay safe and know your limits. Always go out in a group of 4 or bigger and establish a buddy for the night so the both of you can look out for each other and make sure the both of you are safe. It is so important to know your limits in terms of how comfortable you are going out, if you don’t feel comfortable going to a big party then don’t go, if your friends are true friends they will respect your decision not to go and won’t push you to do something you don’t want to.

  • How did you choose your major and why?

Originally when I committed to my college I was a pre-pa major focusing in biomedical. I think this had a lot to do with being a first-generation college student, I wanted to become a doctor and make my family proud even if it wasn’t the fit for me. I had a realization that what I was doing wasn’t the best choice, I wasn’t a science person by any means and I didn’t want to be stressed out my entire college career. So I set up a phone appointment with an academic advisor a month before I started my freshman year and she put me in more exploratory classes to figure out what was truly right for me.

When I started taking interest in Health Administration I met with an advisor for that specific major and instantly fell in love, the idea of still being able to help people but doing it in a different way really made me happy and I knew I choose the right major. It is however totally okay to not know what you want to do, just know that in time you will figure out what truly makes you happy, don’t focus on the amount of schooling or the salary you might receive but what truly is going to make you happy in the long run!

  • I don’t know if you have talked about this but do you deal with mental illness in college? How do you handle it?

This is something I haven’t really talked about but I’m happy to share some coping mechanisms I have adopted throughout the past year. I have always been a very anxious person, but I just figure it was nerved and it was something everyone dealt with. I finally was diagnosed with anxiety and depression about a year prior to coming to college, and it has truly changed my life. I personally take medication that helps control my anxiety and depression, but some days are worse than others. When I first moved to college I would get really homesick and depressed to the point where I didn’t want to get out of bed to do anything. That is when I started going to a counselor, something I had never done before.

Being able to talk to someone and just have them listen is an amazing feeling, I was able to express these feelings and she provided me with different ways of handling what I was dealing with. This truly helped me get my depression under control, and while sometimes it would flare up, I knew that it would pass and I would be happy again. I also developed very bad test anxiety, I always felt that I was going to fail a test, no matter how much I studied for it, I would get my grades back and I would always do better than I had told myself.

Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, in college, there are a lot more people suffering from it than you will know, it is important to know you aren’t alone. Surround yourself with amazing people who will lift you up and remind you why you are on this journey and never lose sight of your dreams and goals.

  • Tips for someone interested in joining a sorority?

So I recently joined a service sorority on campus which means I am not apart of a “true greek” sorority. Basically, we don’t participate in rushing and instead, we do 2 weeks of recruitment followed by a new member period so my sorority does things a little differently but I still do experience the culture of a sorority. Recruitment and meeting all of the girls is a bit intimidating, mainly because I was worried about saying the wrong this and messing up but it honestly is all about being your honest and true self. I remember feeling nervous before I would go to events but once I started to get to know the girls it made me feel so much better.

I would recommend going into everything with an open mind and open heart, be ready to get out of your comfort zone and spend a large amount of your time talking to new people and getting to know them. Also, make friends in your new member class(the people you rush with) because you are all in the same boat and can talk to each other and voice any concerns. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t receive a bid from the sorority you really wanted, there are always others and take it as an opportunity to realize that maybe that sorority wasn’t a good fit for you! A sorority is all about being apart of a sisterhood and experiencing amazing things with amazing people, you will not regret following your heart and creating bonds and friendships with everyone!
