the better me diaries ep. 3: how to make a mood board + mistakes

hello and welcome back to my blog! if you are new here, hello my name is Karla, I am a junior in college majoring in health administration. this series on my blog is going to be a raw, in-depth journey I am taking to get healthy, find myself, face my problems and challenges head-on, find my purpose in this world, and ultimately find who I am. I hope through taking this journey and putting it on the internet, I will be held accountable to obtain the life I deserve, and I hope maybe one person reads this and decides to do the same for them. you can check out the other episodes here.

This week I decided to boost my motivation and inspiration for this journey by creating a mood board! I have made mood boards in the past but this one I wanted to really spend time on in order to give me the motivation and inspiration I need!

The first step in making a mood board is finding images that focus around your goals! I took to Pinterest for this and created a specific board dedicated to these images which you can find here. I used a lot of fitness and healthy eating images as well as quotes and bright colors to capture the mood and aesthetic I was going for!

The second step is printing them off, I copied and pasted all of the images into a google doc and then printed them off at the library using the color printer! If you do not have access to a color printer feel free to print them in black and white!

Next, cut all the images out and you can either tape them in or glue them in whatever you are using! Since I am using my bullet journal I decided to use double-sided tape to stick them down the way I wanted. This is the fun part, you can arrange them in any way you want and create the perfect collage! Here is how mine turned out:

If you have not started a bullet journal I highly encourage you to do so! It is a great way to get organized, inspired and motivated! I find myself looking and writing in my bullet journal at least twice a day, it just reminds me of what I need to do and in a way it holds me accountable!

Moving on, I wanted to talk about how this week went on the journey because it was a rough one. I did not eat healthy like I said I was going to, I ended up going out to fast food a couple times and my snacking was out of control. I did go to the gym once which I was proud of, but it does not make my eating habits disappear.

I know I need to eat healthily, but the convenience of fast food when I am busy is something I get addicted to. When my friends and I hang out, we oftentimes go and get something to eat, so that also adds on to the bad eating habits and spending money.

I know I am not perfect and that is okay, it is normal to have slip-ups and I need to be able to recognized the reasons why I continue to mess up. I know the main thing is being constantly stressed, whether that be about college, work, or my personal life, stress is a big factor that leads me to eat in ways I shouldn’t.

On the bright side, I have been consistently been waking up between 7am and 7:30am and have been sticking to my morning routine. Reading before bed has really allowed me to fall asleep quicker and ultimately sleep better which I am more than happy about.

How I Stay Organized in College!

This post was highly requested so I figured I might as well do it! These methods of organization have been getting me through college for the past 2 years and work for me! Of course, everyone is different so these are some ways I stay organized in college!

  • Google Calendar

So Below I have included a screenshot of what my current google calendar looks like to give you a visual! Each week I go through and put in all the different events I have in my calendar, giving each different area their own color.

I have found that color coding is really what makes this method effective because it allows me to look at everything at a glance in order to see how busy I am going to be during the week and what is keeping me the busiest.

As you can see to the right is my google tasks bar, I use google tasks to put in all my homework, grocery items and anything else I need to do or get during the week to make sure I am on top of everything and getting them done when they need to be!

  • Physical Planner

I recently, in the past year have adapted a physical planner in addition to my digital one. This is super helpful because when I don’t have my phone or laptop out I can quickly jot in something. I keep both systems because that is what works best for me!

I of course color code everything in my physical planner as well, my brain works best when I have things separated by color and it makes things way easier to remember! Something I love being able to do is physically check something off after I have done it, it makes me feel productive and reminds me that I did the thing I am checking off so I never have to second guess if I did it or not.

The planner I have is the Blue Sky weekly/monthly planner and it is from target! You can check it out here!

 

  • General TipsInput everything from your syllabi in as soon as you get them. This includes assignments, exams, and presentations to ensure you are staying on top of things. It also allows you to map out your busy weeks to prepare accordingly!
    • Trial and Error: See what works best for you! Test out different online calendars like Ical, google calendar, outlook calendar, etc to see what you are most comfortable with! Try out different physical planner spreads, like monthly, weekly and even daily!
    • Have fun with it! Get super creative and make it something you look forward to doing in order to keep your motivation and productivity going!

What Classes I’m Taking Fall 2019!

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a junior at Central Michigan University! So I do this post pretty much every semester so I figured I would continue to do it! I will be a junior this year and I am majoring in Health Administration with a minor in Leadership. I will be taking a total of 15 credit hours which is what I have always taken! So here are the classes I am taking Fall 2019!

  • LDR 302: Field Experience in Leadership (3 credits)

So I honestly have no idea what to expect with this class, I know we are required to complete a certain amount of hours in an approved leadership position throughout the semester but other than that I have no idea what to expect. This class only meets once a week for fifty minutes so I am hoping it is not too hard of a class!

  • HSC 544: Biostatistics (3 credits)

I know this is going to be my hardest course this semester. I have not done any kind of math since my freshman year of college, and the last time I did statistics was my senior year of high school. I did very well in my AP stats class though to I’m hoping I will be able to remember the basics and do well in the class!

  • HSC 572: Legal Aspects of Health Service Organizations (3 credits)

I am super excited about the class because I will be able to learn more about the healthcare system and the way it runs! One struggle I have been facing is figuring out what I really want to do with my degree because I can do so many different things. So I am hoping this class will give me a little insight as to what I want to do in the future!

  • GEO 105: Physical Geography: Online (3 credits)

Unfortunately, my college requires we take core courses in order to graduate, and this is one of them. I try to do the majority of these classes online just because I don’t have any motivation to go to the class when it is in person. I am hoping this class will be an easy A and give me the credit I need but we will see!

  • SOC 323: Racism and Inequality: Online (3 credits)

While this is another core requirement I am actually super excited to take this class! With that is going on in the US right now I think it is super important that we be educated on the issue of racism and inequality. So I can’t wait to see what this class has to offer!

So those are the courses I am taking this fall, I can’t wait to get back into the swing of things!

Advice for College Freshman!

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a junior at Central Michigan University! I post book, lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below! Now that I am going into my junior year of college id say I am pretty reputable when it comes to giving advice to an upcoming freshman! Here are some things I wish I would have known before college:

  • Your high school friend group will not be the same.

I think this is such a harsh reality of going away to college but it is very true and everyone I’ve talked to says the exact same thing. Your friends will try and make a pact that you will always be friends no matter what but honestly, college is likely to break all of that up real quick. It’s hard, some friends may go out of state, some will be on the other side of the state and you won’t get to see them every day like when in highschool so yes, your friendships will suffer!

But fear not, this is a healthy process and it is not something you should obsess or stress over! Check-in on your friends every now and then and hang out over breaks or on the stray weekend you both are home, effort is the key factor in maintaining your old friendships when going to college and you will find out real quick that not everyone will put in the same amount of effort you will!

  • No one cares what you wear.

I was the freshman who dressed up for classes every day, and I can tell you that ended real quick. One of the best things about college is nobody cares what the next person is doing, so wear sweats to class, don’t do your makeup, or dress to the nine and beat your face, nobody cares either way. Don’t think people are going to like you better because of the way you are dressed, because chances are they don’t care.

  • Don’t overpack, you won’t use half of the things you think you need to bring.

Oh, how I wish someone would tell me not to bring my entire wardrobe, because let’s face it I wore the same things nearly every week. Yea decor is cute and all but there is only so much you can do to spruce up a dorm room so don’t go overboard because at the end of it all you are going to be the one packing it and hauling it away. You don’t need a thousand pairs of shoes, some sneakers, rain/snow boots, a pair of booties and one formal option will be more than enough! If you have a second thought on bringing something while packing, toss it to the side and leave it at home.

  • It’s okay to sit alone, people do it all the time.

Don’t worry about sitting alone at dinner or at the library, no one cares and I promise no one will think you are a ‘loser’. I was always so scared to go anywhere by myself but you’d be surprised how little alone time you get, especially while living in the dorms so take this time to plug in some headphones and watch some youtube videos, read a book or catch up on some work!

  • Make at least one friend in every class and get their number the first day.

Having friends in classes is one of the most important things to take advantage of! Miss a class, text them and ask for the notes, or meet up to study or do an assignment you both are struggling with. Unfortunately, in college, there will be times where a professor will tell you to pair up, and rather then panic and look around the room desperately you will already have someone to work with!

  • You’re broke, quit spending money.

College will bring you to depths of brokedom you have never reached before. I found myself contemplating buying simple things like Slurpees or going out to eat on lunch simply because I knew I didn’t have the money to. So drop the Starbucks habit, you won’t be able to afford it, find cheaper alternatives to things you love to eat or do!

  • Have fun!!!!!

This is the most important on the list when in college it can be so hard to sit back and relax and actually enjoy yourself. Don’t get too upset if you fail a test, someone else in the class surely did too, don’t get caught up in petty drama, learn that saying no is just as important as saying yes. College is going to bring you so many opportunities and situations you thought you would never encounter, so get out there and join a club or pick up a new hobby, say hi to someone in your hall or ask someone in your class to get dinner! College is what you make it and at the end of it all, you don’t want to have any regrets.

This past month has been jampacked full of all different types of things, new experiences, adventures and things I have fallen in love with! So here are some things I loved during the month of June!

Beauty/Haircare

Now that it is summertime it is so important to make sure your skin is protected, especially the sensitive skin on your face! I have been using this sunscreen on my face for years and recommend it to anyone! It is not greasy at all and does not feel heavy on the skin! It also allows your skin to breath and still get a good tan without burning!

I was in search of a new leave-in treatment for my hair and I am so happy I found this one! This Mist is amazing for when you get out of the shower, it detangles and hydrates your hair as well as takes away frizz! You can also spray it on dry hair to refresh it when you are in between washes!

 

Books

  • Where the Crawdads Sing

Image result for where the crawdads singI have a full review of this book on my blog which you can read here! This book was absolutely amazing and definitely sparked my love for reading once again!

 

  • Then She Was GoneImage result for and then she was gone

I recently finished this book and will be posting a review next week! This book was an amazing murder mystery and thriller, I finished it within a day because I just could not put it down!

  • Gals on the Go

This podcast is perfect for any girl bosses looking to get tips and tricks on how to be the best they can be. Brooke Miccio and Danielle Carolan are college lifestyle YouTubers, their podcast is absolutely amazing and I recommend it to anyone who is in need of some motivation and insight on various topics! Check it out here!

  • Young & Ambitious

I have been watching Siena Mirabella for years now and I have always loved her videos! This podcast talks about various things and is the perfect podcast for girl bosses! Definitely, go check and out here!

  • JBL Flip 3 Speaker

Image result for jbl flip 3 blueI have been using this speaker for a couple years now and it is absolutely perfect for the summertime! It is splash resistant so is perfect for lounging by the pool or going to the beach! The sound quality is amazing and the bass on the speaker is pretty good for such a small speaker!

Summer Wishlist 2019!

There are SO many things I want to buy this summer! Here are a few things I have saved in my cart and will hopefully be purchasing!

These are literally the cutest sandals ever! I have been needing a pair of new shoes because I only typically buy 2 a year so I think these would be a perfect addition to my wardrobe for the summer time!

Recently I have been loving the color yellow and I have always wanted a pair of slip-on vans! I think these would be the perfect shoes to spice up an outfit and make it that much cuter!

 

 

Rompers are my favorite thing to dress up in during the summer! This romper is so cute and old navy is known for their amazing deals and high-quality clothing! This with the checkered yellow vans would be such a cute summer outfit!

This is probably the most expensive thing I want right now but I have been eyeing an Apple watch for so long now! They are so useful, especially now that I have been working out lately and getting back into a fitness routine, and just for the simple fact that they are useful in general! I think I just might have to treat myself to one of these for my birthday in August!

 

Anklets are perfect to show off in the summertime and this one from Pura Vida is so cute! I have ordered from Pura Vida before and it is such an amazing company to buy from, I will definitely be investing in this Anklet before the end of summer!

 

Gymshark Vital Seamless Leggings - Black Marl 4

I have followed Whitney Simmons for years now and because of her, I have always wanted to try the GymShark brand! Since I have started working out I have been wanting to invest in some more workout leggings and sports bras so I will definitely have to try these out!

 

 

There are some things on my summer wishlist! I will definetly be doing a part 2 of this and when I purchase these products I will do a review! Don’t forget to follow my blog for updates every week!

Becoming PR Chair for my Sorority

Hello guys, I know I have not posted in a couple months but I just wanted to update you guys on a recent position I took on! I ran for Public Relations Chair for my Sorority Zeta Theta Pi and won the position!

Social media has always been something I am passionate about, and my sororities social media needed to be completely revamped. It is hard not being a part of greek life, meaning we do not have premade graphics or the well-known name to recruit girls. Zeta Theta Pi is a local service sorority that was established at Central Michigan University in 2007, making us the Alpha Chapter, our other chapter being at Illinois State University.

So these past couple weeks I have been working super hard to revamp our social media to make it appealing and welcoming to potential new members and really showcase what ZTP is about.
