This past month has been jampacked full of all different types of things, new experiences, adventures and things I have fallen in love with! So here are some things I loved during the month of June!

Beauty/Haircare

Now that it is summertime it is so important to make sure your skin is protected, especially the sensitive skin on your face! I have been using this sunscreen on my face for years and recommend it to anyone! It is not greasy at all and does not feel heavy on the skin! It also allows your skin to breath and still get a good tan without burning!

I was in search of a new leave-in treatment for my hair and I am so happy I found this one! This Mist is amazing for when you get out of the shower, it detangles and hydrates your hair as well as takes away frizz! You can also spray it on dry hair to refresh it when you are in between washes!

Books

  • Where the Crawdads Sing

Q&A Sunday pt.1: College, Lifestyle, Sorority and Much More!

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a sophomore at Central Michigan University! I post lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below! Follow my blog instagram here!

This was highly requested for me to do and I got a bunch of questions from you guys! If you would like to send in questions or ask for advice you can message me on instagram(@liveitwithkarla), comment below or email me at lifewithkarla@gmail.com! Let’s get into answering your guy’s questions!

  • How do you deal with roommate issues?

So this question is one I got multiple times and I can totally understand why. For most of us, college is going to be the first time you live with roommates that you don’t know, and it can be rough. Last year I lived in a 4 person dorm with 3 random girls, and it was a big adjustment, to say the least. The first thing to do is sit down and discuss rules, whether you are okay with overnight guests, how clean the dorm needs to be kept, whether or not you are comfortable with your things being borrowed and one of the most important things to discuss is partying, whether or not you are okay with typical party activities happening in the dorm.

One of the main issues we had as roommates was the lack of common courtesy. When living with other people you have to respect that you are not the only one sharing that space, so good things to do are ask before you have guests over or let your roommates know you are having a hard week academically and would prefer to keep the dorm quieter for the week. Any issue can be resolved and if you do not feel comfortable doing it on your own then seek out the help or advice of your RA, that is what they are there for! Focus on your academics and don’t allow roommate issues to impact the way you perform in your classes!

  • Advice for someone who has never partied before? How do I handle college party culture without getting overwhelmed?

First off you do not have to party in college, don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. Partying in college is very controversial but also a big part of the culture. If you do decide to party, stay safe and know your limits. Always go out in a group of 4 or bigger and establish a buddy for the night so the both of you can look out for each other and make sure the both of you are safe. It is so important to know your limits in terms of how comfortable you are going out, if you don’t feel comfortable going to a big party then don’t go, if your friends are true friends they will respect your decision not to go and won’t push you to do something you don’t want to.

  • How did you choose your major and why?

Originally when I committed to my college I was a pre-pa major focusing in biomedical. I think this had a lot to do with being a first-generation college student, I wanted to become a doctor and make my family proud even if it wasn’t the fit for me. I had a realization that what I was doing wasn’t the best choice, I wasn’t a science person by any means and I didn’t want to be stressed out my entire college career. So I set up a phone appointment with an academic advisor a month before I started my freshman year and she put me in more exploratory classes to figure out what was truly right for me.

When I started taking interest in Health Administration I met with an advisor for that specific major and instantly fell in love, the idea of still being able to help people but doing it in a different way really made me happy and I knew I choose the right major. It is however totally okay to not know what you want to do, just know that in time you will figure out what truly makes you happy, don’t focus on the amount of schooling or the salary you might receive but what truly is going to make you happy in the long run!

  • I don’t know if you have talked about this but do you deal with mental illness in college? How do you handle it?

This is something I haven’t really talked about but I’m happy to share some coping mechanisms I have adopted throughout the past year. I have always been a very anxious person, but I just figure it was nerved and it was something everyone dealt with. I finally was diagnosed with anxiety and depression about a year prior to coming to college, and it has truly changed my life. I personally take medication that helps control my anxiety and depression, but some days are worse than others. When I first moved to college I would get really homesick and depressed to the point where I didn’t want to get out of bed to do anything. That is when I started going to a counselor, something I had never done before.

Being able to talk to someone and just have them listen is an amazing feeling, I was able to express these feelings and she provided me with different ways of handling what I was dealing with. This truly helped me get my depression under control, and while sometimes it would flare up, I knew that it would pass and I would be happy again. I also developed very bad test anxiety, I always felt that I was going to fail a test, no matter how much I studied for it, I would get my grades back and I would always do better than I had told myself.

Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, in college, there are a lot more people suffering from it than you will know, it is important to know you aren’t alone. Surround yourself with amazing people who will lift you up and remind you why you are on this journey and never lose sight of your dreams and goals.

  • Tips for someone interested in joining a sorority?

So I recently joined a service sorority on campus which means I am not apart of a “true greek” sorority. Basically, we don’t participate in rushing and instead, we do 2 weeks of recruitment followed by a new member period so my sorority does things a little differently but I still do experience the culture of a sorority. Recruitment and meeting all of the girls is a bit intimidating, mainly because I was worried about saying the wrong this and messing up but it honestly is all about being your honest and true self. I remember feeling nervous before I would go to events but once I started to get to know the girls it made me feel so much better.

I would recommend going into everything with an open mind and open heart, be ready to get out of your comfort zone and spend a large amount of your time talking to new people and getting to know them. Also, make friends in your new member class(the people you rush with) because you are all in the same boat and can talk to each other and voice any concerns. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t receive a bid from the sorority you really wanted, there are always others and take it as an opportunity to realize that maybe that sorority wasn’t a good fit for you! A sorority is all about being apart of a sisterhood and experiencing amazing things with amazing people, you will not regret following your heart and creating bonds and friendships with everyone!

The Best College Classes I Have Taken

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a sophomore at Central Michigan University! I post lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below! Follow my blog instagram here!

This post was highly requested on my Instagram so here it is! I also have an announcement so be sure to read the end of this post! If you have any post ideas or posts you would like to see please comment below! Here are my favorite classes I have taken thus far in my college career!

  • PSY 250: Abnormal Psychology

This class has to be one of my favorite classes I have taken here at central, the content was interesting and the professor was passionate about the course throughout. I took this because I was originally a psychology minor, which I have decided to drop and switch to a leadership minor instead, but I do not regret taking this course whatsoever. It provided me with insight on different mental illnesses and how they affect people in different ways. I learned a lot about illnesses that I personally related to and it gave me a better idea as to why I might experience anxiety and different ways to go about treating it. I received a B in this class, mainly because I did not work as hard as I should have, but the content and professor made this class amazing and I would recommend it to anyone interested in psychology!

  • LDR 200: Introduction to Leadership

This was the first course I took as a part of my leadership minor and it has been my all-time favorite class I have taken. The class was set up so each person was apart of a “family”, basically the group you would be with the entire class and complete activities and projects with. My family was amazing to work with and we still keep in contact even though the class has ended. I got to complete team building activities, learn more about who I am as a leader, rock climb, and by far the most impactful activity we did was ziplining. I have a huge fear of heights, and this activity challenged me to push past the discomfort and fear. We had to climb a twenty-foot ladder up to a platform where we were hooked up to a zip line, we had to say something we wanted to leave on top of that platform, something that has held us back in our lives. For me, I said not being able to truly love myself was something I wanted to leave on the platform, after that we had to fall backward, trusting the zip line to catch us and carry us to the bottom. I remember physically shaking and not being able to control it, a pit formed in my stomach and I began to cry because I was afraid. Finally, I let go of this fear and fell backward, landing safely on the ground. This class taught me so much about myself and has been by far the most impactful class I have had.

  • HSC 507: Introduction to Health Service Organization System

This course was one of the first I took for my major, and it really made me realize my passion for the healthcare system and how much I wanted to change it. We watched a video entitled “Escape Fire”, it was about the U.S health care system and how corrupt and broken it really is, and before seeing this film I did not realize how bad it really was. After watching this film I had a moment where I truly realized why I was majoring in Health Administration, to help people, and that has always been a passion of mine. My professor for this class, who is also my advisor, was very upfront and unlike any professor, I have had before. He really wanted us to succeed, he didn’t want us to worry about our grade but instead focus on the content he was teaching. I appreciate the content this class taught me about not only the healthcare system but about myself as well.

  • HSC 333: Managing Health Populations

I didn’t necessarily like the content in this class, I more am listing this class because of the professor. She has been one of the best professors I have ever had, she really cares about us as students and if we ever had something come up she was super understanding and was always willing to work with us. She also went out of her way to make organize the rest of my classes and set up my course plans for the rest of my time at central. The content in this class was interesting at sometimes, we learned a lot about epidemiology which is very interesting to me. Overall I loved this class because of my amazing professor and all the friends I made in this course!

There are my favorite classes I have taken so far! I am only in my 4th semester of college, so im sure this list will grow as I get farther into my college career. Just to clarify I am majoring in Health Administration with a minor in Leadership!

Reflecting On 2018: highs, lows, college, and growing up.

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a sophomore at Central Michigan University! I post lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below! Follow my blog instagram here!

2018 is finally coming to a close, and it has definitely been a year to remember. Throughout the past 12 months, I have experienced so many different things, both good and bad. I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on the year and everything it has brought to me.

Starting off with the beginning of the year, I wanted to start fresh and make 2018 my year, like every year. I set goals and resolutions but didn’t really stick to them and I ended up carrying a lot of negativity with me into the new year. My freshman year of college was rough, it was a period of figuring out who I am and what I want to do in my life which is overwhelming for anyone.

In addition to that, I experienced falling outs with multiple people in my life that I considered my best friends, my people. There is something about seeing different sides of people, the sides that you never knew existed. So, instead of starting 2018 with a fresh and positive mindset, I allowed that situation to influence me and really impact the way I lived my life.

I went through a very low point in my life where I was considering dropping out of college and going back home because I truly thought I could not pull myself out of this funk. Continuing onto the spring, things got better, I grew my friendship with my now best friend and she made me realize what true friendship was, and how I deserved to be treated.

I took a leap and joined a club centered around my major, and ended up falling in love with it that much more. It allowed me to focus on what I was going to college for, not for friends, I was going for myself to ensure I lived the best life I could. From touring hospitals to attending different workshops to become more educated about my field, it was all such an amazing experience.

Heading into the end of spring I was more than ready to get out of my dorm, final exams zipped by and I finally packed up all my things, loaded them in my car and leaving that dorm allowed me to leave behind all of the negativity that took place that year. I remember on the drive home I just took a sigh of relief, knowing I was finally done with the year and could finally begin to recover and build myself back up from the year.

During the summer I took a nannying job, and I can truly say I am blessed to have met such an amazing family. This summer was one of the best summers I have ever experienced, I got to go to the movies, the zoo, amusement parks, arcades and the beach with such amazing kind hearted kids, and I am excited to do the same this summer.

The end of summer brought my birthday, my brother and I usually celebrate our birthdays together because they both fall in August so we took a trip to an amusement park. This day was fun in the beginning, I conquered my fear and rode a roller coaster and had a day of fun in the amusement and water park. The day ended on a sour note, one I don’t like to linger on, so my 19th birthday wasn’t what I wanted it to be, at all.

Going into my sophomore year of college I was so excited, move-in day came fast and before I knew it I was moved into my own apartment. Living alone has been pretty bittersweet, I love the independence of living alone but it is hard to deal with my depression being alone for most of my time.

This semester has been one of the happiest, stressful and just fun times of my life. I joined a sorority and met my amazing big, Zeta Theta Pi has definitely changed my life in so many ways and I am so thankful to be a part of such an amazing group of girls. Being in a sorority has forced me to step outside my comfort zone and really embrace making the best out of this year.

The end of the semester ended on a high note, I managed to earn a 3.7 this semester which brought my cumulative GPA up. I worked very hard in my classes this semester, mainly because they were classes involved in my major and minor and I was passionate about getting to learn more about the health care field.

Going into 2019 I am going to start with a clean slate, I want to get back on track with fitness, eat healthily and really just embrace everything this new year has to offer. I know I can stay positive this year and really work to improve myself and my mental health.

I know this post was lengthy and wordy but I really wanted to reflect on the year and everything I have gone through. Take this opportunity to start the new year off right and embrace everything it has to offer, get closer to your friends and family, step out of your comfort zone, pick up a hobby and just live the best life you can live!

My Goals For 2019!

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a sophomore at Central Michigan University! I post lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below!

So last year I did the same post but for 2018 and I actually accomplished some of those goals! So I wanted to do the same this year to give me something to look at and hold myself accountable for! So here are my goals for 2019:

  • Reach 2,000 Followers on this Blog

As of right now, I am at almost 1,300 followers on this blog which I am so thankful for! But as I head into the new year I want to begin keeping to a weekly upload schedule in order to really grow my blog! I also want to start different series like a weekly Q & A and advice post, what do you guys think? If you want to follow or subscribe for more of my content click here or to the side of this blog!

  • Reach 500 Followers on Blog Instagram

So I have recently started a new Instagram for my blog in order to connect with fellow bloggers and really promote my content! I have been on the fence about doing this for a while because I always link my personal Instagram but sometimes I feel weird posting my content to there because it has all of my friends and family on it! So with that being said my Instagram for my blog is liveitwithkarla!

  • Begin My Fitness Journey

So for a while, I have been wanting to lose weight but with class, work and sorority it has been super hard to eat healthily and work out. But this year I am not using any excuses and I am going to start eating good and working out! I want to try intermittent fasting as it fits in perfectly with my schedule and I have a terrible snacking at night problem that I need to get rid of! If any of you have tried intermittent fasting and have tips please comment them below!

  • Develop My Photography Skills

Yesterday I made the decision to finally invest in a camera, which is something I have been wanting to do for a long time now! So I bought a Nikon D3200 from a friend, and I am so excited to get to learn all of the ins and outs of photography and really just develop the passion I have always had! If any of you have any beginner photography tips please comment them below I would really appreciate it!

  • Continue Doing Well In College

I have been doing pretty well throughout my college career and this past semester I ended up with 4 A’s and 1 B-, I will do a separate post reflecting on this semester and my classes but going into the spring semester I want to start off as strong as I did this semester in order to end up with the same success.

  • Connect With Other Bloggers

So recently I joined the Gals on the Go facebook page which was developed from the gals on the go podcast which I highly recommend you guys go give it a listen, you can listen here. It has given the opportunity to connect with other girl bosses and just air out my struggles, getting tips, and just networking in general! So with that being said if any of you want to connect and just have someone to talk to my email/dms are always open! My email is lifewithkarla@gmail.com and all of my social media is listed below!

These are just a few of my goals for 2019 and I hope I can accomplish all of them! Comment some of your goals down below!
