September was full of ups and downs and really was a jam-packed month in general, here are some my favorite things from September!

  •  Getting assigned to lead an Alternative Winter Break focused around the social justice issue of ending animal exploitation!
  • Developing new friendships and getting to know new people!

  • I ended up smashing my finger and breaking it this past week and it was really tough to deal with by myself.
  • Feeling lost, alone and homesick at times and not knowing how to deal with it.

Now let’s get into some of my favorite things!

I bought this product on a whim and ended up absolutely loving it! I use this in my everyday makeup routine to provide a little bit of cover which makes me feel that much more confident and ready to take on the day! Even though it is full coverage it is lightweight and does not look cakey at all!

Chuck Taylor All Star High Top Black

I finally caved and bought these “basic” shoes and I fully understand why everyone loves them! They take a casual outfit and makes it look that much more put together! They are super comfortable and my feet never hurt after walking around campus in them every day!

One of my favorite college lifestyle youtbers Abby Asselin finally started a podcast and I could not be happier! Gen Z Girl Podcast is all about inspiration in doing what you love and being who you are and Abby is the perfect person to talk about that! Go check it out, trust me you will not regret it!

This month I have really been into Billie Eilish, 5 Seconds of Summer and much more! I make a new playlist every month as a fresh start to make sure I am switching up what I am into! I also started a feels like fall playlist which is chill and fall vibes music, you can give that a listen here! As always you can follow me on Spotify to keep up with what I am listening to! @karlaa.smith

This has been one of my favorite shows for a long time! I absolutely love the drama and storyline of the entire cast and how everything is portrayed and put together! If you are looking for a new show I would definitely recommend this one!

One of my favorite things about fall is fall scents and this candle is absolutely perfect for fall! It has such a rustic scent that makes my room smell amazing, and it lingers even when im not burning it! I got this candle for my birthday and it is for sure amazing!

This has been an absolute lifesaver because I have been so busy I often do not want to cook at the end of a long day. But this is so easy to make, all it takes is 5 minutes and you are good to go! I usually throw in some chicken and I will have enough for dinner the next day as well!

Those are some of my favorite things from September! I hope you enjoyed, as always keep up with me on my links listed below!

Turtles All the Way Down

Genre: Young Adult Fiction

Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis.

Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.

Genre: Domestic Fiction

Little Fires Everywhere

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned—from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.

Enter Mia Warren—an enigmatic artist and single mother—who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.

When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town—and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides.  Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia’s past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs.

Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, and the ferocious pull of motherhood—and the danger of believing that following the rules can avert disaster.

The Unhoneymooners

Genre: Romance & Humourous Fiction

Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Amelia, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.

Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.

Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of…lucky. With Christina Lauren’s “uniquely hilarious and touching voice” (Entertainment Weekly), The Unhoneymooners is a fun and charming romance that is perfect for anyone who has ever felt unlucky in love.

Genre: Young Adult Fiction

What if all the crushes you ever had found out how you felt about them…all at once?

Sixteen-year-old Lara Jean Song keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her. They aren’t love letters that anyone else wrote for her; these are ones she’s written. One for every boy she’s ever loved—five in all. When she writes, she pours out her heart and soul and says all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only. Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly, Lara Jean’s love life goes from imaginary to out of control.

The Hate U Give

Genre: Young Adult Fiction

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Genre: Fantasy

At seventeen years old, Tenley “Ten” Lockwood had to make the ultimate choice—where to live after she died. Loyalty to her selected realm has not wavered…until now.

As the Everlife descends into darkness, a single truth becomes clear: Troika and Myriad must unite at long last—or perish. In order to bring sworn enemies together, Ten must enter forbidden territory and destroy the powerful Prince of Ravens. But there’s only one way inside—bonding with Killian Flynn, the deadly rival who sets her blood aflame.

When betrayal leads to the edge of utter defeat, Ten and Killian will have to rebuild trust from the ashes of their hearts. Victory seems impossible, the odds stacked against them. In the end, how far will they be willing to go for the sake of their realms and the Everlife?

Watching You

Genre: Thriller & Suspense

You’re back home after four years working abroad, new husband in tow. You’re keen to find a place of your own. But for now, you’re crashing in your big brother’s spare room.

That’s when you meet the man next door. He’s the head teacher at the local school. Twice your age. Extraordinarily attractive.

You find yourself watching him. All the time. But you never dreamed that your innocent crush might become a deadly obsession.

Or that someone is watching you.

In Lisa Jewell’s latest “bone-chilling suspense” (People), no one is who they seem—and everyone has something to hide. Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn and Ruth Ware, Watching You will keep you guessing as “Jewell teases out her twisty plot at just the right pace” (Booklist, starred review) until the startling revelations on the very last page.

I Almost Forgot About You

Genre: Romance

In I Almost Forgot About You, Dr. Georgia Young’s wonderful life—great friends, family, and successful career—aren’t enough to keep her from feeling stuck and restless. When she decides to make some major changes in her life, including quitting her job as an optometrist and moving house, she finds herself on a wild journey that may or may not include a second chance at love. Georgia’s bravery reminds us that it’s never too late to become the person you want to be, and that taking chances, with your life and your heart, are always worthwhile.
Big-hearted, genuine, and universal, I Almost Forgot About You shows what can happen when you face your fears, take a chance, and open yourself up to life, love, and the possibility of a new direction. It’s everything you’ve always loved about Terry McMillan.

Zac and Mia

Genre: Fiction

“When I was little I believed in Jesus and Santa, spontaneous combustion, and the Loch Ness monster. Now I believe in science, statistics, and antibiotics.” So says seventeen-year-old Zac Meier during a long, grueling leukemia treatment in Perth, Australia. A loud blast of Lady Gaga alerts him to the presence of Mia, the angry, not-at-all-stoic cancer patient in the room next door. Once released, the two near-strangers can’t forget each other, even as they desperately try to resume normal lives. The story of their mysterious connection drives this unflinchingly tough, tender novel told in two voices. The Truth About Alice: A Novel

Genre: Fiction

Everyone knows Alice slept with two guys at one party. When Healy High star quarterback Brandon Fitzsimmons dies in a car crash, it was because he was sexting with Alice. Ask anybody.

Rumor has it Alice Franklin is a slut. It’s written all over the “slut stall” in the girls’ bathroom: “Alice had sex in exchange for math test answers” and “Alice got an abortion last semester.” After Brandon dies, the rumors start to spiral out of control. In this remarkable debut novel, four Healy High students tell all they “know” about Alice-and in doing so reveal their own secrets and motivations, painting a raw look at the realities of teen life. But in this novel from Jennifer Mathieu, exactly what is the truth about Alice? In the end there’s only one person to ask: Alice herself.

This title has Common Core connections.

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell

Start Date: June 25, 2019

Finish Date: June 26, 2019

Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Suspense and Domestic Fiction

“Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter.

She was fifteen, the youngest of three. She was beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers. She and her boyfriend made a teenaged golden couple. She was days away from an idyllic post-exams summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her.

And then she was gone. Now, her mother Laurel Mack is trying to put her life back together. It’s been ten years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie’s case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a café, no one is more surprised than Laurel at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she’s meeting Floyd’s daughters—and his youngest, Poppy, takes Laurel’s breath away.

Because looking at Poppy is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she’s tried so hard to put to rest begin to haunt Laurel anew. Where did Ellie go? Did she really run away from home, as the police have long suspected, or was there a more sinister reason for her disappearance? Who is Floyd, really? And why does his daughter remind Laurel so viscerally of her own missing girl.”

My Review:

This book was an absolutely amazing read! It’s complex plot and plot twists really left me on edge throughout the entire book. This is by far one of the best murder mystery books I have read in a long time, it was unpredictable and by the end, I was very shocked at how everything turned out!

I was able to connect and really picture every character in this book which is not easy to do as a reader sometimes. Finishing the book in a day can be attributed to how addictive and suspenseful the book itself was, at the end of every chapter I was left wanting to keep reading to find out just what was going to happen.

I would recommend this book to someone who wants a nailbiting story that will leave you second guessing pretty much everything! In the end, it will all come together and that alone makes the book so amazing and well thought out! Definitely one of my favorite books of the entire year so far!

Where the Crawdads Sing: Book Review!

Recently I have fallen back in love with reading and I couldn’t be happier. I decided to order some books off of Amazon that have been raved about and recommended to me, each book I read I will write a review to let you guys know what I think! There will be little to no spoilers in these reviews! Follow me on GoodReads to keep up with my reading progress! My username is karlaasmith or you can find my profile here.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Start date: June 23, 2019

Finish date: June 24,2019

“For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life—until the unthinkable happens.”

My Review:

This book easily earned five stars from me. I am typically not into books like these, but this story changed my perspective completely. This book is so much more murder mystery, it is truly a coming-of-age story. Through the twists an turns of Kya’s life the book eludes to a murder that took place near the marsh as they try and figure out who could have been the killer.

The romance in this book is unlike anything I have read before, there are no cheesy, typical things you would read in a basic romance novel, the romance in this book is raw and a depiction of what falling in love as we grow really is all about.

This book took me less than twenty-four hours to finish, I had the hardest time putting it down and as I neared the end I dreaded not being able to read the book anymore. The story itself starts out a little slow but quickly sucked me in and captured my attention and my emotions.

I was really able to connect with Kya and everything she was feeling and had gone through in the duration of the entire book. The twists and turns this story took had me anticipating the next chapter to see just where the plot would go, and I was always left wanting more. The ending of this book left me in absolute shock, I was not expecting the plot twist it had taken and was genuinely left surprised.

I would recommend this book to anyone, no matter what they like to read you will find enjoyment out of this book! Be ready to devote your time to this book because you will not want to put it down!

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a sophomore at Central Michigan University! I post lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below!

I can’t believe it is already almost December! I have 3 weeks left of this semester and then I am on Christmas break for 3 weeks! My family has been asking for my Christmas list for this year and I posted one on my blog last year so I figured I do it again this year! Here is my Christmas wishlist for 2018:

  • Black Rain Boots(Size 8.5)– It rains so much around the spring and fall time and my college campus is notorious for puddles and flooding. I am sick of going to class with wet feet and decided maybe it is time to invest in a pair of rain boots like everyone else!
  • Image result for north face jester black laptop 15North Face Jester Backpack in Black– I have been needing a new backpack for so long, the one I have now is from my sophomore year of high school so I have been using it for quite a long time!
  • Vera Bradley Iconic Zip ID Case (Indio)– Recently after 4 years of having it my Vera Bradley ID case finally broke, in the meantime, I ordered a cheap version off of Amazon but I would love to have another one of these, they are so useful and convenient to carry around!
  • Brita Water Pitcher(5 Cups)– I am a big water drinker and would love to have a pitcher to store in my fridge to keep it cold and filtered!
  • Anything Sorority related: A tote, Sweatshirts(Medium), Shirts(Medium), Ect. My sorority is Zeta Theta Pi!
  • Sports Bras(Small) and Black Sports Leggings(Small)- I have been in need of some new sports bras and leggings and I want to start working out again so these would be a perfect motivation!
  • Anything Harry Potter- Obviously being a potter head I would appreciate receiving anything Harry Potter related.
  • Anything CMU: Sweatshirts(Medium), Shirts(Medium), room decor, ect.
  • Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies about Who You Are So You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be– I have heard nothing but good reviews about this book and have been looking for a good self-help book to read and really get into!

The Hate U Give– I have a thing about not watching a movie before I read the book and I have been wanting to see the new movie The Hate U Give. Then I found out that there was a book and I absolutely have to read it before I go and see the movie!

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them– Of course being a huge Harry Potter fan I need to read this book and can not believe I haven’t done so yet!
  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child– Again being
a huge Harry Potter fan this is a book I have been wanting to read since it came out and am super excited to finally get my hands on it and read it!
  • Every Breath– This is a Nicholas Sparks book, whom of which I am a huge fan of, and I seriously cannot wait to get my hands on it!
  • Gift Cards: Target, Meijer, Walmart, Kohls, McDonald’s, Culvers, Subway, Panera, Taco Bell, TJ Maxx, Bath and Body Works, and Visa Gift Cards.
  • Fuzzy Socks

I just want to take a moment and acknowledge the holiday season is not about getting gifts, my favorite part of the holidays is, in fact, giving and spending time with my family and friends! Don’t take the holidays for granted and remember to be thankful!

Fall Essentials!

If you are new to my blog hello! My name is Karla and I am a sophomore at Central Michigan University! I post lifestyle and college-related posts and would love if you would subscribe to this blog to keep up with me and of course follow all my social media listed below!

Check out my recent Instagram post here!

Fall is by far one of my favorite seasons, I love the beautiful colors of the leaves changing, the chilly weather, going to the pumpkin patch, apple cider and so much more! Here are some of my essentials for fall!

  • Candles

By far my favorite thing about fall all the different amazing scents that come with it! I love anything pumpkin spice and apple, it’s a subtle yet pleasant smell to keep your room smelling nice and fresh! Here are some of my favorite candles for the fall:

Hot Cocoa & Cream 3-Wick Candle - Bath And Body Works

Hot cocoa and cream from bath and body works is by far one of the best scents! It makes your room smell like freshly baked brownies if that is the type of scent you like I would totally go for this one! You can check it out here.

Flannel 3-Wick Candle - Bath And Body Works

I got the flannel candle for Christmas and it was lit almost 24/7 in my room last year! This candle is more of an earthy and musky smell and it provides a freshness to the room without being too overpowering! If you like more of the woodsy scent then this is for sure the right candle for you! Check it out here!

  • Decorations

Having my own apartment this year I for already knew I was going to decorate for every season! Having the freedom to decorate how I want is the best thing because Halloween is one of my favorite holidays to decorate for!

Halloween is one of the easiest holidays to decorate for because it is so easy to DIY things and make it look cute! For me personally, I have multicolored string lights all around my apartment which add a pop of color and a good vibe. I also recently painted a canvas at a sorority event(I am not an artist so it’s trash) and it just adds that extra hint of Halloween to my wall.

I get most of my decorations from dollar tree! They have cute and cheap decorations that you could even add your own touch to and give it something extra!

  • Tailgating

A big fall essential in college is football tailgating! I looked forward to tailgating so much this year because now that I am a sophomore I know more about how tailgate works and how to dress for it! Because I live in Michigan, the weather can vary during tailgate season, on homecoming I wore a crop top and leggings yet last weekend for our rival game I work a sweatshirt, leggings, and gloves because it was snowing.

Tailgating is definitely what you make of it! Have a good school spirit, rep your school and find an amazing group of friends to go with to make it that much better! At my school, we take tailgating pretty seriously and it is something everyone goes to and it is such a fun atmosphere to be a part of!

  • Fall Fashion!

Sweater weather is my favorite weather and fall is the perfect time to break out the fuzzy sweaters, flannels, and boots! My go-to during fall is a sweater layered with a flannel, leggings and black combat boots. There is so much you can do with a flannel to make an outfit unique and that much cuter and that is a big part of why I love fall so much!

I am also a big sweatshirt and hoodie type of girl and it is easy to throw on and go to class in while still looking cute yet comfortable! Hoodies keep me warm and there is nothing better than being comfortable in class, especially the long ones that seem to drag on and on!

Those are some of my fall essentials! I hope you guys enjoyed reading this post, I will for sure be doing a part 2 in the near future!
